Peter Stephen

February 4, 1936 — February 18, 2022

Gravenhurst

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Peter Blair Stephen, of Gravenhurst, Ontario, announces his peaceful passing on February 18, 2022 at home, at the age of 86, after a courageous battle with cancer and a life well-lived.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario on February 4, 1936 to Blair and Alma (Halliday) Stephen, Peter graduated from Indiana State University as a mechanical engineer, and was a member of Phi Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was also a member of The Granite Club in Toronto for 60 years, and a lifelong golfer and curler. In 1965, Peter began a 40-plus-year career in Canada’s plastics industry, first with Danson Corporation in Toronto and eventually with his own successful sales firm Stephen Sales Group. His accomplishments include receiving two “CanPlast” awards from the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, serving as the only three-time chairman of the Plast-Ex trade show in Toronto, and being a founding member of the Canadian Plastics Pioneers Association. Peter was also only the third Canadian to be inducted into the Plastics Pioneers Association of America.

Peter will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 33 years, Terry Anne; five children, including sons Mark (Laila) Stephen and Blair (Jarka) Stephen, stepdaughters Liisa Kuuter and Tina (Todd) Jackson, and stepson Troy (Vanessa) Kuuter; grandchildren Cameron, Jamie, Kyra, Stephanie, Charley, Paige, Brenner, Kc-Jo, Kennedy and Kyla; great-grandchildren Bryar, Rayelle and Rennley; sister Elizabeth (Earl) Barnsley, sister-in-law Leona Uhran, nieces Melissa, Stephanie and Zoey; first wife Faye Haddow; and many new and long-time friends. Peter was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law John Uhran.

Peter, Terry Anne and their children enjoyed many years of skiing in Ellicottville, New York at the family chalet, and summers at the cottage on Lake Muskoka they owned for 20 years. Peter and Terry Anne retired to Muskoka in 2007, and Peter became a proud member of the Gravenhurst/Muskoka community and enjoyed volunteering at the Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre. He was especially pleased to have been invited to join “The Guys from the Pit.” Peter and Terry Anne also travelled throughout North America, South America, the Caribbean, Great Britain, Europe and Asia, and spent numerous winters in Florida and Ajijic, Mexico.

The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Richardson; the team from HCCSS North Simcoe Muskoka, especially nurses Lisa, Jackie, Shannon and Jennifer; nurse practitioner Susan; and stepdaughter Liisa, daughter-in-law Jarka and friend and neighbour Karen Heaslip for their compassion and loving care.

The funeral service will be held on March 1 at 1:00 pm at Cavill-Turner Funeral Home, 215-1 Bay Street, Gravenhurst, with reception to follow at the Cliffside at Muskoka Bay Resort.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Research would be greatly appreciated.
