Leona Illean Goerk

Leona Illean Goerk, a beloved stay-at-home mom, the "hub of the family," and a talented homemaker, passed away with loved ones by her side on August 14, 2023, at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, ON. 

Born and raised in Muskoka, Leona led a fulfilling life that was centered around her family and home. She epitomized the role of a nurturing and loving mother, creating countless cherished memories for her loved ones. One such memory was their annual summer get-togethers at the cottage. These gatherings brought joy and laughter to their lives and created lasting bonds between family members and friends.

Her husband Alex fondly remembers attending all of the Carlton Showband events with Leona. It was an activity they both enjoyed immensely and provided a sense of shared happiness. The family also reminiscences about the many fishing trips they embarked on together in the earlier days. Those trips were always filled with adventure, making every moment memorable.

Leona had a dynamic personality characterized by her kindness, sweetness, selflessness and caring way about her. She had a knack for organizing things efficiently and making sure everything ran smoothly. Her attention to detail and dedication earned her the respect and admiration of those around her.

Apart from being an incredible caregiver, Leona had diverse interests that showcased her talent and creativity. She enjoyed knitting, card making, crafts, gardening, and had a deep passion for music. Leona's musical talents were evident through her proud accomplishments of achieving grade 8 in piano and teaching others to play this beautiful instrument.

In addition to her hobbies, Leona was renowned for being an amazing baker and cook. Her delectable creations delighted the taste buds of friends and family alike. The warmth she put into every meal was a testament to the love she poured into nurturing those around her.

Leona's legacy will continue to live on through her surviving family members whom she cherished dearly. She leaves behind her loving husband, Alex Laurence, and their children: Michael (Theresa), Sharon Hickey, and Brenda Burtch (friend Byron). Leona also had the joy of being a proud grandmother to Katrina (Brendan), Kevin (Jackie), Christopher, Alex, Jessica (Adam), Kenny, Thomas, and great-grandsons Grayson and Lucas. Her sister-in-law Louise was always a supportive presence in her life. She will also be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews, Grant, Brian, Beth, Carolyn, Colleen, and Paul and their families.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Illean Kirbyson, her brother Beverley Kirbyson, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joyce and Doug Thain, and niece Kathy. Their memories will forever be held dear by those who loved them.

A visitation will be held to celebrate Leona's life on August 21, 2023, from 2:00 PM - 4:00 & 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Cavill Funeral Home located at 215 Bay Street in Gravenhurst, ON. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on August 22, 2023, starting at 1:00 PM, with a light reception to follow. A private interment will take place in Mickle Memorial Cemetery.

Leona Illean Goerk will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her kindness, love, and dedication to her family have left an indelible mark on their hearts. As we mourn our loss, let us also celebrate the remarkable life she lived and the beautiful memories she created. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
