John Christensen

July 25, 1929 — December 9, 2013

A life of love, laughter and good friendships came to an end when John Andreas Christensen, QC, died peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2013 at the age of 84 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia. John was the much loved child of the late Andreas and Roxie Christensen. John leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend Barbara of 57 years and children Lisa (Rick Sellon), Sara (David Tomlinson), David (Shirley Christensen) and Keri (Brian Carrigan). "Gung"will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Christopher, Kate, Conor, Gavin, Kent, Reeve, Kalyn and Aidan. For 50 years John practiced law in Gravenhurst...until he got it right! He had a successful career doing what he loved best. All his cases were argued with vigor and love for the law. He served his community in many capacities both elected and appointed, as Chair of the Georgian College Board of Governors, Muskoka Board of Education, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Muskoka Historical Steamship Society and co-owner/publisher, with Cyril Fry, of the Gravenhurst News. John's love for walking and talking led to the creation of the South Muskoka Memorial Walking, Marching, Cycling , Swimming, Paddling, Chowder and Save White Lake Society. John balanced his love of the law with his dedication to family, church, travel and support of the arts. John's joie de vive and insatiable curiosity held family and friends captive on his whirlwind journey called "life". We loved him, we admired him and we will miss him. The family would like to acknowledge and thank all the hard work and dedication of the members of the dialysis unit in Orillia, the kind and caring support during the last two years from nurses Jan, Joanne and Linda and the quiet comfort he received from Alex and Terry. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m. at Cavill-Turner Funeral Home (215-1 Bay Street, Gravenhurst). A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity United Church (290 Muskoka Road North, Gravenhurst) on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Trinity United Church or to a charity of your choice.
