Conway, Ivan Murray Passed away peacefully at the Granite Ridge Retirement Residence in Gravenhurst on Thursday August 15, 2013 in his 92nd. year. Ivan was the beloved husband to the late Nina Lorraine Conway (nee Robson). Both Ivan and Nina proved to be wonderful parents to their children; Joe Dukes, Robert Flude, Mike Barbetta, Frank Conway and Laurie Oake (nee Conway) and to the late Peter Dukes. Ivan was the much loved grandfather to Peter Dukes Jr., Shane Yamamoto, Nina Brandt (Barbetta), Melaine North (Conway), Melissa Conway and Micheala Conway. Ivan was also a great grandfather to; Sierra, Savanna and Brodin Yamamoto, Rose and George Brandt, Brooke North and Elsa Dukes. Ivan is predeceased by his siblings, his brothers; Gordon, Gilbert, Russell and James and by his sisters; Beatrice Conway, Dolly Tasker, Fay Montgomery and Ilda. Ivan was an avid gardener. Many local towns people would visit Ivan at his farm on Bethune Drive in Gravenhurst at Christmas time to select and purchase the perfect Christmas tree from his supply, or in the Summer, folks would travel to the farm to pick the delicious raspberries that he grew. During his working years, Ivan was employed at the Muskoka Centre as a stationary engineer. It was Ivan's responsibility to manage and maintain the boiler system for the large institution. Ivan was a veteran having served in WW II. Serving in the Canadian Army from February 19, 1944 until August 9, 1946. He was an infantryman with the " Hastings Prince Edward Regiment" and he served his time beginning in Italy and travelled throughout Europe to Holland. Ivan was in the Netherlands for their liberation in 1945. Both Ivan and Nina were avid volunteers. They spent many hours volunteering for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #302, Gravenhurst, the Ontario Humane Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and for the Canadian Cancer Society . In addition to the many hours of volunteer work that both Nina and Ivan performed, Ivan also helped on the various committees to help save and restore Gravenhurst's historic buildings; the Gravenhurst Train Station and the Gravenhurst Library. At 91 years of age, Ivan was truly an amazing person for his age. Still a very independent and active person. Up until very recently his lived on his own. He took great pride in his silver car and could be seen driving his car around the town daily. You knew it was Ivan Conway driving when all you could see over the steering wheel was the peak of his cap. Each morning Ivan would meet the "gang" at McDonalds for his morning coffee and to hear about the local news and to pick up a bit of the local gossip as well. His afternoons were usually spent running various errands or playing cards several times a week with his friends. This past Spring, Ivan received the news that he had Lung cancer. Even though he remained positive, about the prognosis, Ivan could not beat this disease and he passed away peacefully on Thursday August 15, 2013.
