Freddie Appleton

December 18, 1930 — May 13, 2015

Gladys Fredericka (Freddie) Appleton (nee Schell) December 18, 1930 - May 13, 2015 After a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, Freddie died peacefully at The Pines in Bracebridge. Born of pioneer stock in Bracebridge, Freddie spent most of her life as a champion of Muskoka. After graduating from Gravenhurst High School, she was recruited to teach at a one-room school in Buck Lake. This began a distinguished career in education spanning 37 years. Favourite schools included Ufford, Britannia, Mara and Glen Orchard. Freddie was a gifted educator who shaped the lives and minds of her students providing them with a solid foundation for their future lives. She was honoured with a Life Membership to the Muskoka Retired Women's Teachers of Ontario in recognition of her many years of dedicated participation and contribution. After her retirement, Freddie's professional career did not end as she went on to be a Municipal Councilor for the Township of Muskoka Lakes for 2 1/2 terms. Freddie also took time out from her professional life to raise her family and build her home with her husband, Jan. A great lover of Muskoka she was happiest in her garden. The family wishes to thank the staff of The Pines Nursing Home for their compassionate care in providing Freddie with a safe and welcoming final home. Freddie predeceased by her husband John (Jan) Appleton, and her siblings Olga Campbell, Margaret Scott, and Elvin Schell. Will be missed by her sister Marie Walker, brother Roland Schell, and stepsister Wilva Miller, by her children Debbie Appleton and Bryan Appleton, Daughter-in-law Roberta, and grandchildren Christopher Smith, Kyle and Carmen Appleton. A Celebration of Life will occur on Saturday May 23rd at Freddie's home on Lake Muskoka in Walker's Point. Please join the family for an afternoon of remembrance. The celebration will begin at 1 pm.
