Condolence: Dear Hank, Kim, Scott and Alison

The news of my Aunt Barbara’s passing hit me very hard last week. Auntie Barbara has been a constant presence, influence and source of joy my entire life. I include in this all the small things (Chelsea buns) and the big things (Camping, Family Jamborees and deep friendships). Since the passing of my Mother and Father, Aunt B also became a living embodiment (reminder?) of a whole catalog of memories about Mom and Dad that took on greater vibrancy when we were together. For all these reasons it was impossible not to feel devastated last week. We have all lost something integral and irreplaceable.

Along with the sadness, however, came an enormous flood of the most wonderful and happy moments of my life. Consulting the Family Albums and a pausing for a little reflection it is clear that my formative years (and Tania’s) would have been unrecognizable without Aunt Barbara. We had so much fun together! But in all that fun we also learned how to live through her guidance and example. Amongst other things, Aunt Barbara showed how to meet the challenges presented by life with optimism and confidence, and how to find happiness, satisfaction and meaning in it.

I also remembered how much Aunt Barbara’s friendship meant to my Mother. This was obvious any time they would get together, but maybe even more so when Aunt B would call our house! My mother despised talking on the phone. She wouldn’t talk to me for more than a minute without finding some excuse to hang up. When Aunt Barbara called it was a whole different story. Mom became 40 years younger. Phone calls with Autie Barbara provided me with a window on my mother as a twenty-something. It was cute. It was wonderful. I was overjoyed that my Mother had such an important and wonderful friend.

Aunt Barbara lived a full, dynamic and consequential life. All those that have loved her are very sad at her passing, but we will carry her memory forward. She leaves a strong legacy in the four of you and the long list of other people whose lives she touched deeply (Tania and I specifically).

Condolence: Dear Hank, Scott, Kim and Alison, We are so sad to hear of your terrible loss. Barb was a wonderful first teacher to our daughter Laura but she was much more than that. She was strong and funny and a very caring person who readily made us feel part of your family during our time in Canada, as did you all. Her thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit was an inspiration to us and we were very fortunate to experience her warmth and positive attitude to life. We hope you will find comfort in remembering the way she lived and was loved. Much love Steve, Jean, Katy and Laura.

Condolence: Dear Hank, Kim, Scott and Alison, I am so sorry to hear that Barb has died. Although it's been many years, some people leave a lasting impression. Barb was one of those people. She was always a kind, compassionate and faith filled person. Her passing will leave a hole in many hearts, but none more than yours. May your memories and the love shared with her sustain you in the coming days and weeks. Ann

Condolence: Dear Hank & Family, Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of Barb. We were very sad to hear this. Barb was a kind and loving teacher to our daughter Becky in the early 90's at GPS. We'll never forget the 20 or so little 'gingerbread like' houses she made for each child in her JK class to decorate one year. I'm sure there are many children who will have lovely memories of Barb as a teacher.
Thinking of you with love and prayers, Linda and Rob Viejou, Parry Sound (formerly of Gravenhurst).
